The JL Eye Clinic has been led since this February by a top expert, renowned ophthalmologist and specialist in the treatment of the retina and vitreous body, MUDr. Ivan Fišer, Ph.D.
In an interview with the Health Journal, he reveals much about his career, the offer to work as a chief physician, and the vision for the future direction of the entire facility.
How did the offer to lead the JL Eye Clinic come about?
In the interview, the chief physician reveals, among other things, why he decided to make a change and left his previous position at the private eye clinic in Prague, where he spent many years and also served for a long time as chief physician. “I spent 18 years of my life at my previous workplace. I established the Vitreoretinal Centre there. We were starting a retinal practice from scratch; as the first in the country, we began treatment of macular degeneration with injections. And then suddenly, the offer came from the JL Clinic at Sun Square, asking if I would like to do something similar, that is to run the clinic from the position of chief physician, which was a new life challenge for me,” explains MUDr. Fišer.
AI in medicine and poor awareness
You will also learn that he supports artificial intelligence, which is finding its use in ophthalmology, and that he regrets the low level of public education regarding eye diseases. He sees this clearly thanks to his many foreign experiences. “It seems to me that our population is not seriously interested in getting involved and seeking information about these matters on their own. When I compare the knowledge of patients filling the waiting rooms of our American, English, French, or German colleagues, I still feel that here the interest is much lower than in neighboring countries,” he states.
What will be the future development of the clinic under new leadership
MUDr. Fišer sees the development and future direction of the JL Eye Clinic very positively. “We want to develop eye surgery, increase the number of cataract surgeries, expand the number of patients treated for macular degeneration, and significantly advance retinal and vitreous surgery, as that is my specialty. We also want to increase the number of lens surgeries due to refractive error with the goal of freeing patients from glasses.”
“The JL Eye Clinic undoubtedly has a bright future ahead,” concludes the chief physician.
